How To Grow Roses:
The Making of Gol گل

“Memory (the deliberate act of remembering) is a form of willed creation. It is not an effort to find out the way it really was — that is research. The point is to dwell on the way it appeared and why it appeared in that particular way.”

— Toni Morrison, The Site of Memory

How to Grow Roses: The Making of Gol is a snapshot of a larger project, Gol گل, which examined the paradoxical relationship between preserving memory, its disintegration, and its transformation across the mind, print media, and web-based platforms. We focus on an image of the artist with her father in the first home he owned. Over time the photograph undergoes transformations as it’s translated across materials, devices, and media.
